The morning of Tuesday 12th April saw a team of Volunteers from Sainsbury’s visit The Nomad Trust’s Emergency Night Shelter to see how they can support the charity.

Led by Deputy Store Manager, Andy Burgess, the team included Staff from across all departments, looking for ways they can support their community.

They were shown the shelter’s facilities and given the opportunity to talk with staff about supporting the Trust.

Mr Burgess explained how the team wanted ‘to understand why and how’ their support was needed; ‘we can look at both helping within the community and reducing our waste.’

The team invited The Nomad Trust to submit an application to their upcoming Charity of the Year project, which will be voted on by Sainsbury’s customers later this year.

Sainsbury’s have a very successful waste management programme, where none of their waste food goes in to landfill. Excess food goods are donated, or refined in to biofuel.

The Supermarket has provided the trust with food donations over the past three years, and is now wishing to expand and formalise this agreement.

Victoria Bradshaw, Project Manager for the Nomad Shelter, said ‘Our residents eat well, lots of fruit and veg… But we’re really excited at the prospect of good quality meat, and particularly eggs.’

When speaking with Nomad Staff about the supply of food goods, Mr Burgess, Deputy Store Manager, disagreed with policies ensuring disposal of edible food goods, stating;

‘If we would eat it, why can’t someone else..?’

Speaking of The Nomad Trust’s Shelter, ‘it is in our city, our community, and we can raise our game!’

The Nomad Trust and YMCA Lincolnshire have just had plans approved to build a new Emergency and Supported Accommodation Centre, including Day Services, Training facilities, Clinical and Social spaces.

Those interested in supporting the new facility can donate to our #SleepEasyLincoln2016 campaign; phase one of our fundraising for new build, open until Monday 18th April.

The Nomad Trust won £1,000 and plans to use the funds to buy a new pair of boots for each of the homeless people currently making use of its facilities.

The charity supports Lincoln’s homeless community and provides a number of services including the county’s only emergency night shelter, accommodation advice and supported housing facilities.

Between 16th November and 6th December 2015 the charities’ supporters were challenged to make as much noise as possible on social media using the hashtag #RedCupCheer in a bid to secure £1,000 from the coffee giant.

Victoria Bradshaw, Nomad Trust Project Manager, said: “Thanks to our Twitter followers we acquired the most retweets and were overwhelmed to find out that we’d been awarded the funding, just in time for Christmas.

“For most homeless people their only mode of transport is their feet and we’d like to try and alleviate many foot problems by providing a decent pair of boots or shoes this Christmas.

“Thanks to everyone who got involved – your input is going to help us make such a difference!”

The charity recently ran a crowdfunding page to raise money to pay for Christmas dinner for homeless people, offering the hand of friendship and an opportunity to celebrate during the time of year when many people feel isolated and lonely.

YMCA Lincolnshire & The Nomad Trust have launched our first Crowfunding Campaign!

This year, we need your help to give the homeless the Christmas we all want!

Visit www.crowdfunder.co.uk/christmasforthehomeless to support the campaign!

Within the Lincoln area we know of 86 individuals who are homeless and we would like to do 3 things for them this Christmas with your help:

1. Provide a Christmas Box
This would contain little gifts such as toiletries , hat, scarf and gloves, socks, chocolate etc.

2. A Christmas Lunch
Served by our staff and volunteers. To make our Homeless individuals Christmas special and to show as a community: We Care

3. Give each person a pair of Boots or Shoes
For most homeless people their only mode of transport is their feet. YMCA Lincolnshire would like to try and alleviate many foot problems by providing a decent pair of boots or shoes.

Being Homeless makes people very isolated and at a time of year when the rest of us look forward to our Christmas Celebrations, homeless individuals can feel even more lonely.
Through this project The Nomad Trust want’s to offer friendship and support for a brighter future in 2016.
