Horticulture Project

In 2010, we recruited a gardening volunteer, Mary, to help turn the jungle posing as a garden behind our charity shop into an actual garden! With the help of the shelter service users, it was transformed into a vegetable garden, produce of which has since been used in the shelter and sold in the shop.

Due to the success of the garden, Nomad asked Mary to help us set up a horticulture project where service users and move-on residents can get involved in growing vegetables and flowers.

It is widely believed that gardening can be used as a therapeutic tool and can help those suffering from long term anxiety and depression. The project so far has involved titivating the garden up at the St. Giles move-on accommodation and many of the residents there have taken pride in transforming the garden into an attractive area encompassing a seating area, greenhouse and vegetable plots.

Funding has been applied for to set up 2 allotments which will help further on the project. The allotments will be used to produce vegetables to either use in the shelter or move-on accommodation, or to sell as vegetable baskets to make the project self sustainable.
