Move-On Accommodation

The Nomad Trust has seen a need for move-on accommodation for a few years now. Many of our service users are resettled into supported accommodation eg, YMCA or into private rented flats/house shares. We find that some of our service users are not in need of the full time support that housing associations offer however are not quite able to support themselves in their own flat or house. Our move-on houses offer the best of both worlds.

There is a housing officer who is not always on site but is there to assist the residents in any way they can. This gives the residents independence but with the knowledge that if they are struggling, there is help on hand.

There are three houses, two for ex-forces (total 12 beds) and one for civilians (8 beds). All of the residents have been homeless or vulnerably housed in some way. Many of our residents are just in need of a helping hand to get them back on the ladder to a positive future.

Since the project opened in August 2011, roughly 30% of the residents have moved out into their own accommodation. 3 residents have gained full time employment through the encouragement and motivation of the project.

Part of the move-on accommodation agreement is that the residents take part in volunteering and/or in the activities that take part in one of the houses. This encourages them to get out into the community and take part, to gain references and improve their C.V.’s. Many of our residents have been out of work for years and therefore find it hard to get a foot back in the door. By volunteering, they are getting up regularly in the morning, gaining structure and having a purpose to their life again.

We have recently converted the garage on site in to a life skills room where residents will learn skills such as cooking.
